Project overview
HAMR has been experimenting with bole constructions for a few years now. The Doubravka lookout tower is the outcome of this experimental process. It would not be an exaggeration to say that it is a technical, as well as an expressive impulse for contemporary architecture, as the whole world searches for a way to live in better harmony with nature, to reduce the carbon footprint and, above all, to emerge from the deep crisis we are now going through. This structure is our response to many of these challenges. The project, as well as the construction, was supervised by David Kubík on behalf of HAMR. We overcame many problems during the process, from local land use documentation to issues around building permits, structural calculations, deadlines and the availability of acacia timber. We faced further setbacks related to the removal of the bark and limits to the bending of individual boles, which impacted the shape of the structure. There were also structural calculations relating to the joints and the search for ways to join the rounded timber, to fasten the construction to the ground and to effectively join the timber on the ground. Atypical scaffolding and four cranes were required to complete the structure in the air. Last but not least, there was adversity due to the weather, which led to a break in construction for several months, as the site was not accessible. These problems, however, have all been solved: the load-bearing tests have been successful and returned better results than we had hoped for and Prague’s first new lookout tower in 70 years is now accessible to the public! The lookout tower is the result of a competition commissioned by Prague 14 (mayor Radek Vondra) and was completed with the support of LANDIA management s.r.o. (Mr Kamil Hošťák), with additional financial support from the owners of the individual steps. Thank you all!
