Project overview
This project is an example of a situation where preference was given to a reconstruction rather than a demolition followed by the construction of a completely new building with a bigger capacity. After the analysis of all investment possibilities, the investor’s final decision was to preserve the building, mainly because of their relationship with the place and fond memories thereof. The housing block where the house is located is in the south-eastern part of the city of Pardubice, close to the old town and the Chrudimka river. The house is used as a company headquarters by its owner. The ground floor provides space for various activities, and the two floors above are used as office space. A long initial discussion defined the objective of the reconstruction: improve the utility value as well as the architectural value of the house by engaging in a dialogue between its original and new layers. The result is, to a certain extent, an example of a contradiction between form and utility: the architectural language of the exterior does not match the functional diversity of the interior. The highest floor represents a new layer, which sits like a crown on top of the historical two-floor “socle”. As part of the creative dialogue mentioned above, we had to deal with several remnants of the house’s historical craftsmanship. Interior design is unified for all floors - the mostly white background of walls, ceilings and vaults and sober floor colours are accentuated by built-in furniture from rosewood veneer in more public parts of the house. The exterier boasts a combination of a grey coat with horizontal bossage profiling on the street side, which covers the brick two-floor “socle”, and a darker crown of the top floor - vertically profiled black and brown metal cladding.
